March 2015 in Lacock - popular filming location

Most of Lacock is owned by the National Trust. These quaint cottages probably date from the 1800s.

No space is wasted with separation of buildings!

One stop shopping and posting your mail

The National Trust is a charity dedicated to preservation & protection of historic places & spaces.

The Red Lion where we had an unmemorable lunch...

The roads have no lines making Lacock popular for filming.

Too cold for ice cream? Never!

First founded in the 1200s, Lacock Abbey was part of Pride & Prejudice & featured in eerie scenes in Harry Potter.

Bath Walking Tour March 10, 2015

The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Bath England is an Anglican Parish Church and a former Benedictine monastery. Founded in the 7th century, it was reorganized in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries; major restoration was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s. It is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country. It is still an active place of worship today with hundreds of congregation members and thousands of visitors each year. The detail on the column represents Bishop Oliver King who helped rebuild the church along with the help of King Henry V11. Legend says that Bishop King had a dream in which he saw the church being reconstructed by an olive tree and a crown. Using a magnifying glass, you can see the olive tree and the crown on the left column.

The Avon River in Bath includes a weir: under water dam to reduce the flow of water.

The whole city was black from soot in the good old days of burning coal. Once it was outlawed, they scrubbed the buildings clean. The whole city looked like this building before the cleanup.

Hospital created for the poor - the camera caught our guide Jeremy having a nap. :-)

Interesting building - windows at different heights. (Each section is independent of the others.)

The Assembly Rooms were built in the 1700s and have been the heart of the city's social life for the past two centuries. The rooms each have a name that labels them but they provide a variety of uses today as they have in the past. The flowering tree (below) grows next door to Assembly Hall.

The trees are beginning to bloom

Medieval clock(1386) The world's oldest mechanical clock

It took 38 years to build the Cathedral, using 60,000 tons of stone, 2800 tons of oak and 420 tons of lead.

One of four original copies of the Magna Carta (1215)

The Magna Carta stressed that everyone, including the King, had to treat people fairly and no one was above the law. It contains clauses on social justice that are pertinent today as well as when it was first written. The Magna Carta has inspired the UN Declaration of Human Rights, American Bill of Rights and the constitutions of many other countries.

The Cathedral houses elaborate tombs belonging to kings, bishops and patrons.
